Opening our Mind to Consideration – Concept 5

Individuals have the right of appeal and petition in order to ensure that their opinions and personal grievances will be carefully considered. Concept 5 – Spiritual Principal: Consideration

We all like to feel heard. Being able to have an equal opportunity to speak our opinions is a great beginning, but… is it an environment where there are ears that are really open to hear? There is a difference.

When we are open to really listen, we are open to change. Change is good for any situation, for that is where there are opportunities for growth. Nothing stays the same in life; it is always evolving. When there is no change, things become stagnate, sick and can inevitably end in death.

When you hear warning signs of, “Well, we have always done it that way!”, “We’ve discussed that before”, or you might happen to see no effort to find a solution by anyone even when one is presented. If no one is open to a solution except their own, there is a problem.  Concepts are not being practised.

I once was at a retreat where we had an exercise where we paired up with someone. We both were to think of an interest we both were enthusiastic with. We were to consider a stance on the subject and present it to the other. The thing is, we were both to talk at the same time for 2 minutes straight, no stopping. After we had our say, we were asked, so, what did your partner have to say? We could not answer.  We both didn’t hear anything because we were so focused on what we needed to say and wanting to be heard. It was humbling to see.

That need for control can be a stumbling block within a group. This is why we have Traditions and Concepts.

There will be times when a voice may not be heard.  Concept 5 recognizes that and states that we all have the right to appeal; bring something back to the table for a discussion.

In listening, so much can be heard. Things we may have not considered. Being open minded to hear what is being said, opens our minds to consideration.

A spiritual principle which is valuable in making decisions for the whole, whether it be in OA, or any group work or family unit.
