The first time I was invited to speak was at the monthly OA Foot Steps milestones event. One of the organizers heard me mention that I had recently reached sixty days of abstinence. She reminded me that I
could reach out to the milestones committee to have a coin sent to me and she asked me if I would be willing to speak at the milestones event just a couple of weeks away.
I was nervous but excited. I had shared at meetings but that was just for two or three minutes at most. Did I have enough experience, strength and hope to share for ten to fifteen minutes? I turned the nerves over to my Higher Power and looked forward to the event.
When I arrived and saw the familiar faces and festive backgrounds any last bit of anxiety about speaking left me and I ended up feeling like I had just had a casual talk with friends. It felt great to listen to other people share days, months or years of abstinence or time they had been in OA.
Celebrating with other fellows in a relaxed and festive (yes there is music!) atmosphere is something that is fun for everyone. Whether I am having a milestone myself or there to be happy for my fellows, I have made a point of attending this event every month ever since my first time there.
