HOW OA Works – Behind the Scenes

Limited Series

Ever wondered how OA functions behind the scenes? You’re not alone!
Follow us as we continue to explore the structure, roles, and service bodies that help keep OA running. From Intergroups to Regions, from service concepts to conference-approved literature—we’re diving into the nuts and bolts of OA service.

What are representatives?

Let’s talk about representatives.  These individuals represent one service body to another.

Intergroup Representatives form the bridge between groups and the Intergroup.  The Intergroup relies on these representatives to voice the group’s opinions and support the Intergroup’s activities.  Both Intergroup Representatives and group members are encouraged to provide service to Foot Steps eight committees.  Foot Steps contains about 200 meetings, but many committees operate short-handed.

Region Representatives link the Intergroup to the Region.  There are nine regions globally.  I’m sorry to say that there used to be ten regions, but one closed a few years ago due to a lack of service workers (i.e., Intergroup representatives).  Foot Steps belongs to the Virtual Region; they are hosting a convention February 20 – 22, 2026.  Volunteers and representatives are also needed here.  Check out oavirtualregion.org for opportunities to serve.

Delegates link Intergroups to World Service.  They attend an annual World Service Business Convention (WSBC) to vote on changes to bylaws and business motions.  They also commit to working on a committee for the entire year. If you want to represent OA Foot Steps at WSBC, you fill out an application here. You can check out our special limited series on WSBC.

I was once asked why a group should belong to an Intergroup.  My answer was simple:  to ensure that OA exists tomorrow.  One meeting a week, either in person or online, will not spread the OA message in a way that ensures future growth.  OA relies on the Intergroups, Regions, and Service Boards to present global meeting schedules, new and revised literature, and the policies that guide our organization forward.
